Cueva de Altamira

The Altamira Cave is a World Heritage site since 1985, it is located in Santillana del Mar.

The cave is a natural cavern in limestone rock and is around 270 meters long. During the Palaeolithic period, the cave was inhabited by human groups for thousands of years.

The area of the paintings is in the part of the cave known as the "polychrome room".

El Soplao Cave is situated between the towns of Valdáliga and Rionansa and it was discovered at the beginnging of the twentieth century.

Inside, the cave is home to authentic natural "pasadise" of striking formations with large areas coated in aragonite, false ceiling, stalactites, stalagmites, especially helictite and eccentric (anti-gravitational) creating a show of lights and shadows, sensations, colours and smells.

It is unique in the world due to the variety of the mineral formations.
